This hauntingly beautiful family picture has been with me all week. It's not your typical book cover image, and turns out to be a photo of the author's family. The beauty of the photo combined with the book's title And Darkness Was Under His Feet fill the reader with a feeling of poignancy and foreboding. I'm looking forward to hearing the voices in these stories.

Greetings: I am the writer of AND DARKNESS WAS UNDER HIS FEET: STORIES OF A FAMILY and wanted to say thank you for featuring the cover here. It is indeed a beautiful photograph that was among my father's things. I don't know where or when it was taken (he's the little boy in the middle,between my grandmother on the left and great grandmother, after whom I was named, on the right), but I'm guessing it was about 1917-8 either in Berlin or near it.

I discovered your book one evening while reading The New York Review of Books. The cover photo caught my eye, and I wanted to know more.
ReplyDeleteOops. That's my great-grandmother, Anna, on our left, and my grandmother, Martha, on our right. Anna raised my father after Martha died very young of pernicious anemia.
